is walking 3 miles to work 5days a week a good sub. for an expensive gym membership?

I'm considering giving up my gym membership (to save money) and walking the 3 miles to work everyday. I know I would be consistent about it and I'd probably do a yoga or pilates video a few days a week. But I just don't know if a brisk 3 mile walk is enough exercise! If I do the walk in about 40 minutes is that enough 5 days a week. I'd like to slowly start losing 1-2 lbs a week.

definately!!walking is such a good form of exercise and its a great way to lose weight too ;)

Not a complete substitute, but a start. Gyms offer equipment that works on specific muscles. Getting a few items from a store like wal-mart can increase muscle tone in other areas like arms, abs, etc.

Check Shape Magazine for at-home workouts using what you have around the house and stay with it.

It depends on how you define brisk walk…..

If you walk as if you're racing (known as race walking), you'll rev up your heart rate and speed up your metabolism, to burn excess fat from your entire body.

When you walk like this, you increase the intensity level of your exercise and you can cover more miles in shorter time.

3 miles per day for 5 times per week is good enough if you just want to maintain your weight and health.

But to lose weight, you need to cover more miles in the 40 mins session.

Here's a detailed explanation on how to walk to lose weight: http://www.perfect-body-toning.com/walking-exercises.html

Yes, your walk program plus your Yoga/Pialtes session, I would say, is sufficient to replace the gym membership.

Gym has equipment to help you exercise and trainers to help you along. But exercise without equipment is equally as effective.
