My team studied benefit walk culture through participant observation, videography, and informal interviews on-site. Excited by the surge of positive energy and enthusiasm generated by the walking event, we were disappointed to see how quickly it faded after the walk ended. We developed the goal of extending this feeling of community beyond the event itself. The team designed a takeaway object (RFID pedometer) and social networking website (StepShare.com) to facilitate further communication among walkers, regardless of geographical location, and to promote greater involvement in charitable organizations.
